Abstract

THE EFFECT OF LEG MUSCLE STRENGTHENING EXERCISES ON THE SPEED AND ACCURACY OF KICKS IN PENCAK SILAT ATHLETES

ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of leg muscle strengthening exercises on the speed and accuracy of kicks in pencak silat athletes.
Methods: This research used a quantitative experimental method with a two-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 20 respondents were divided into an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 10 athletes. The experimental group received leg muscle strengthening exercises in the form of plyometric training performed 2–3 times per week, while the control group continued their regular training. Kick speed was measured by the number of kicks performed within one minute, while kick accuracy was measured by the time required to complete 10 accurate kicks on the target board. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, followed by paired t-test or Wilcoxon test for within-group analysis and independent sample t-test or Mann–Whitney test for between-group comparison.
Results: The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant improvement compared to the control group. The average kick speed in the experimental group increased from 54.6 to 83.8 kicks per minute, while the control group increased from 52.9 to 56.3 kicks per minute. In terms of accuracy, the experimental group showed a decrease in completion time from 6.9 seconds to 4.7 seconds, while the control group decreased from 6.9 seconds to 6.4 seconds. Statistical analysis indicated that leg muscle strengthening exercises significantly improved kick speed and accuracy in pencak silat athletes (p < 0.05).
