Abstract
This study examines the existence and forms of resistance demonstrated by orange farmers in responding to social changes resulting from the modernization of tourism in Junrejo Village, Batu City. The rapid development of the tourism sector has contributed to the conversion of agricultural land, shifts in the local economic structure, and changes in occupational orientation from agrarian activities to the service sector. These transformations have created various pressures on orange farmers, particularly in relation to the sustainability of their livelihoods and agrarian identity. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving eight orange farmers selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that orange farmers in Junrejo Village continue to maintain their existence despite the growing dominance of the tourism sector. Their existence is reflected in the continuity of orange cultivation, the preservation of agricultural land, and the continued significance of farming as the primary source of household livelihood. Furthermore, the farmers develop various forms of everyday resistance, as conceptualized by James C. Scott. These forms of resistance are manifested through selective production management to maintain the quality and sustainability of harvests, crop diversification through the planting of secondary crops between orange trees, and the decision to persist in farming despite increasing economic pressures and changing social conditions. This study demonstrates that orange farmers are not passive recipients of social change. Rather, they actively negotiate and adapt to the transformations taking place around them in order to preserve their agrarian way of life. Thus, the existence of orange farmers in Junrejo Village should be understood not only in economic terms, but also as an effort to maintain social identity and the continuity of agrarian culture amidst the expansion of tourism.
