Abstract

This study aims to identify and compare the differences in framing, as well as the underlying meanings behind those differences, between BBC.com and Al-Jazeera.com in reporting the Jakarta protests on August 28, 2025, following the tragic death of online motorcycle taxi (ojek online) driver, Affan Kurniawan. The analysis was conducted using Robert N. Entman's framing theory, which encompasses four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. Additionally, this study links the findings with Shoemaker and Reese's Hierarchy of Influences theory to explain the factors influencing the production of these media messages. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through framing analysis on news articles published by both media outlets between August 28, 2025, and September 9, 2025. The results indicate that Al-Jazeera.com critically framed the August 28 protests as a form of structural injustice and law enforcement brutality. Conversely, BBC.com tended to frame the protests as an issue of national security and stability. This framing divergence was shaped by influences at the ideological and organizational levels; Al-Jazeera.com operates with anti-hegemony values that side with vulnerable groups, whereas BBC.com is bound by the principles of impartiality and national stability regulated by the Royal Charter and Ofcom guidelines.
