Abstract
Background: As the human body ages, cell regeneration decreases, which can trigger degenerative diseases such as knee osteoarthritis (OA). This condition causes joint pain, stiffness, and limited mobility, significantly impacting functional ability and quality of life. Physiotherapy using electrotherapy modalities such as TENS and physical exercises such as closed kinetic chain (CKC) are commonly used non-surgical approaches to address this issue. However, research comparing the effectiveness of these two interventions is limited.
Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of electrotherapy intervention with the addition of closed kinetic chain exercises on improving functional ability in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Methods: This was a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental design using a two-group randomized pretest-posttest method. A sample of 30 respondents was selected through purposive sampling at the Sumber Taman Physiotherapy Independent Clinic Practice. Respondents were divided into two groups: a control group (15 participants) who received only electrotherapy (TENS) and an experimental group (15 participants) who received TENS and closed kinetic chain exercises. Functional ability was measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire.
Results: The Independent Sample t-test yielded a significance value of p=0.465 (p>0.05), indicating no statistically significant difference between the effectiveness of the two intervention groups.
Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference between the effectiveness of the two intervention groups.
