Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a chronic condition with a high prevalence, particularly among the elderly, who are at risk of serious complications due to its often asymptomatic nature. Physiological changes in older adults, combined with the use of combination antihypertensive therapy, increase the risk of drug-related problems, particularly drug interactions.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the characteristics of potential drug interactions involving antihypertensive medications in geriatric patients at the outpatient clinic of UMM General Hospital, including patient characteristics, severity, mechanisms of interaction, and the distribution of the number of medications used.
Methods: This study is an observational study using a quantitative descriptive approach and retrospective data collection.
Results and Conslusion: The study results indicate that the majority of patients experienced more than one potential drug interaction, at a rate of 60.58%. The most prevalent mechanism of interaction was pharmacodynamic, with the highest proportion of cases falling into the moderate severity category (77.22%), requiring therapeutic monitoring. The most frequently found drug combination was nifedipine and bisoprolol. It can be concluded that the potential for drug interactions in geriatric patients is quite high, thus requiring the active role of healthcare professionals, particularly pharmacists, in identifying and monitoring therapy to improve the safety and effectiveness of antihypertensive medication use
