Abstract
Movies serve not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying the cultural values and beliefs that thrive within a society. This study aims to examine how the myths and beliefs of the Banjar people are represented in the film “Saranjana: Kota Ghaib.” The method employed is a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis to examine the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings of audiovisual symbols in the film. The results of the study indicate that this film represents various myths and beliefs of the Banjar community, such as beliefs in the supernatural realm, the existence of Saranjana City, as well as religious practices related to mosquito nets, kapuhunan, yellow cloth, and katulahan. These representations illustrate the Banjar community’s perspective on the relationship between humans and the supernatural world, traditional values, and cultural norms that are still upheld to this day. This study demonstrates that film can serve as a medium to introduce local culture to a broader audience and contribute to semiotic studies within the contexts of communication, film, and local culture.
