Abstract
Interpersonal communication is a fundamental aspect in maintaining harmonious relationships between family members. In dysfunctional families, the communication process often experiences obstacles due to division, conflict, or the absence of one of the parental figures, which impacts the child's psychological condition and the dynamics of family relationships. This phenomenon is important to study in order to understand how communication can continue amidst these limitations. This study aims to determine the forms of interpersonal communication that occur in dysfunctional families. This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews with informants who experienced dysfunctional family conditions. The research analysis used the family communication theory of Mary Anne Fitzpatrick and Ascan F. Koerner which emphasizes conversation orientation and conformity orientation in the family. The results of the study indicate that communication barriers between children and parents in dysfunctional families are influenced by family conflict, divorce, loss of a parent, authoritarian communication patterns, violence in the family, and a lack of emotional openness. Low conversation orientation causes children to have no space to express feelings, opinions, and complaints to their parents. Meanwhile, high conformity orientation is seen in the demands, control, and dominance of parents towards children without considering the child's emotional condition. In addition, communication barriers in children's emotions, communication barriers that cause distance, differences in views due to age, environment, and generational factors also cause communication conflicts in families. These communication barriers cause interpersonal relationships between children and parents to become strained, the emergence of emotional trauma, fear, anger, and a tendency for children to suppress feelings and withdraw from family communication. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that dysfunctional families have various unhealthy communication barriers that affect the quality of the relationship between children and parents. Therefore, more open, supportive, and empathetic communication is needed so that interpersonal relationships within the family can be established better.
