Abstract
Social diversity significantly influences linguistic variety. Variations in language are shaped by the environment and the relationships established within specific jobs, professions, positions, or tasks. In the context of construction workers, the specific language variations used for professional purposes are referred to as registers. This study aims to describe the forms of registers employed by construction workers in Batu Merah Village, Sirimau District, Ambon City. This linguistic phenomenon is examined through a sociolinguistic perspective, considering that construction workers possess a distinctive vocabulary used for effective communication within their professional group. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques included participant observation, in-depth interviews, note-taking, recording, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal two forms of registers: closed registers (24 items), such as cakar ayam, ero besi, tarek banang, and tiang nok; and open registers (37 items), such as atap rumah, ayakan pasir, rangka plafon, tali aer, and ika besi. It can be concluded that the use of registers among construction workers in Batu Merah Village is functional, practical, and heavily influenced by the work context as well as the social background of the local Ambon community.
