Abstract
Choosing a major in vocational high school should consider the compatibility
between students’ interests and their chosen field to support future career planning. However,
some students still choose their major without considering their interests. This study aims to
predict students’ career direction by analyzing the compatibility between their chosen major
and career interests. This research used a quantitative approach with a descriptive method. The
participants were 100 students of SMK PGRI 3 Malang aged 15–18 years from various majors.
Data were collected using the MAIS Interest Test which measures six types of career interests:
Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Descriptive analysis
was used to determine the mean, frequency, and percentage of compatibility between interests
and majors. The results showed that the most dominant interest type was Enterprising, followed
by Social and Artistic. The compatibility analysis indicated that 41% of students had interests
aligned with their chosen major, while 59% did not. These findings highlight the importance of
career guidance services in schools to help students understand their interests and potentials
for future career planning.
