Abstract
The generation gap between Baby Boomer parents and generation Z children often triggers conflict due to differing characteristics and technological disruption. This study aims to describe the communication styles of Baby Boomer parents and their impact on the quality of parenting messages for generation Z within the Karang Werda La Rose elderly community in Mulyoagung Village, Dau Subdistrict, Malang Regency. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and documentation of three families selected as the final result of strict purposive sampling criteria. The results show that the communication style of Baby Boomer parents is not uniform, but is heavily influenced by the family's sociological structure and the child's maturity level. Parenting success is highly determined by relational framing negotiation, where parents prioritize the affiliation frame (a friendship approach) through relaxed, open, friendly, and attentive styles before applying the dominance frame of rules. This approach is proven effective in maintaining message quality and suppressing the child's ego, in contrast to emotional styles (dramatic and animated) which actually create psychological noise and resistance. Furthermore, this study found the phenomenon of interaction in families to be related to a more positive outlook. Although generation Z are digital natives, the delivery of parenting messages absolutely requires face to face channels. Digital text message mediation is proven to be reductive and triggers semantic barriers in the form of emotional misinterpretation. Therefore, the integrity of parenting meaning can only be realized through direct physical interaction.
