Abstract
Emotion regulation is an important ability in early adulthood that plays a key role in maintaining emotional stability, psychological well-being, and the quality of social functioning. However, this ability can be influenced by negative experiences in childhood, such as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This study aimed to examine the effect of ACEs on emotion regulation in early adulthood and to analyze the role of resilience as a moderating variable in this relationship. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. Participants consisted of 203 early adults aged 18-25 years, recruited using purposive sampling. Measurements were conducted using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) to assess emotion regulation, the Adverse Childhood Experiences–International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ) to measure ACEs, and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) to assess resilience. Reliability testing indicated excellent internal consistency across all instruments: ERQ (α = 0.937), ACE-IQ (α = 0.957), and CD-RISC (α = 0.963). Data were analyzed moderation analysis with PROCESS Macro Model 1 JASP with the JASP software. The results of the moderation test showed that the interaction between ACEs and resilience was significant (Estimate = 0.009; z = -8.527; p < 0.001), indicating that resilience moderates the relationship between ACEs and emotion regulation.
