Abstract

This study aims to analyze the underlying rationale for the internalization of religious moderation values and to describe the process of internalizing these values at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat Lamongan. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed through the processes of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, while the validity of the data was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that the rationale for the internalization of religious moderation values at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Drajat Lamongan is based on three main aspects: the ideological and theological foundations of Islam emphasizing the principle of wasathiyah (moderation), the socio-historical context of a pluralistic society, and the strategic role of the pesantren as a center of religious education and a social agent in maintaining harmony in religious life. The process of internalizing religious moderation values is implemented in an integrative and holistic manner through the roles of the curriculum, educators, and parents of students in building an ecosystem of religious moderation, as well as through evaluation, collaboration, and social impact as indicators of successful religious moderation. This implementation instills four main indicators of religious moderation: national commitment, tolerance, rejection of violence, and appreciation of local culture. The internalization process contributes to shaping students’ character to become moderate, inclusive, tolerant, and adaptive to social diversity. This study produces a model of internalizing religious moderation values based on an integrative and holistic pesantren educational ecosystem. This model provides a theoretical contribution to the development of Islamic education studies and a practical contribution as a reference for strengthening moderate character education within pesantren environments.
