Abstract

The phenomenon of out of town female students in Malang presents challenges in social adaptation and the formation of adolescent morality. In this situation, communication between mothers and children becomes crucial as a means of maintaining emotional closeness while instilling moral values. This study aims to analyze mother-child communication patterns and the factors influencing them. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with a purposive sampling technique among female students from Sociology Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation, analyzed using George Herbert Mead's symbolic interaction theory and Diana Baumrind's parenting theory.
The results show that communication occurs intensively, openly, and dialogically, particularly through digital media. Communication serves not only as an exchange of information but also as a means of internalizing moral values such as religiosity, responsibility, and self-control. The resulting communication patterns tend toward authoritative (democratic) parenting with semi-authoritarian parenting under certain conditions, balancing freedom and control, along with trust and moral guidance. Mothers act as listeners and guides, encouraging their children to make reflective decisions. Influencing factors include the intensity and consistency of communication, openness, trust, the mother's role, busyness, parenting patterns, and the social environment of the migrant population.
