Abstract

Early childhood education not only emphasizes the development of cognitive and motor skills but also plays a crucial role in shaping character, moral values, and cultural awareness from the earliest stages of life. In Riau Province, the Tunjuk Ajar Melayu Riau (TAMR) serves as a source of local wisdom containing ethical guidelines and social norms. The utilization of TAMR in early childhood education practices remains limited, particularly in the form of engaging, contextual media that aligns with children‟s developmental stages. This situation results in children having a low understanding of local cultural values as well as disaster preparedness skills. This study aims to develop a teaching material design in the form of a picture storybook incorporating Tunjuk Ajar Melayu, with the goal of enhancing disaster preparedness attitudes among early childhood learners. The specific objectives of the study include: producing a picture storybook teaching material incorporating Tunjuk Ajar Melayu, describing the feasibility of the teaching material, and describing its effectiveness in improving children‟s disaster preparedness attitudes. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method with stages including needs analysis, design, product development, expert validation, limited and field trials, and product revision. The results showed that the picture storybook met the criteria for very high feasibility based on expert assessments in terms of content, language, presentation, and graphic design. Teachers and students responded very positively, indicating a high level of acceptance. Effectiveness testing revealed a significant improvement in the disaster preparedness attitudes of children using the book compared to the control group. Integrating Riau Malay local wisdom made the learning process more contextual, enjoyable, and effective in shaping children‟s character. The final product is a printed book featuring three types of disasters fire, flood, and earthquake while combining cultural values, visual literacy, and practical experiences into a single integrated learning medium.
