Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between social media addiction and sleep disturbances in young adults (18–25 years, N=139). The results reveal a significant positive correlation (r=0.514; p<0.001), confirming that increases in social media addiction correspond with increases in sleep disturbances. A critical finding shows that although the majority of respondents experienced high-category sleep disturbances (53.24%), social media addiction levels were predominantly in the moderate category (54.68%). This discrepancy indicates that the damaging effects of social media on sleep can emerge early, even at levels of use considered "normal." The study concludes that sleep health diagnosis and intervention must recalibrate their alert thresholds, as serious risks already manifest at lighter stages of use. Theoretically, these findings support a risk-gradient model approach and enrich sleep disturbance theory with the concept of digital arousal as a contributing factor. For clinical practitioners, screening for social media habits is important in sleep disturbance assessments. Policy efforts should focus on developing healthy media use guidelines. Future research is encouraged to explore mediating mechanisms — such as FOMO and stress — as well as longitudinal studies to examine causal relationships.
