Abstract
Early adulthood is a developmental period marked by heightened emotional and social demands, making emotion regulation a critical capacity for psychological adjustment. One factor retaled with emotion regulation is insecure attachment, which shapes how individuals understand and manage emotions in interpersonal relationships. In collectivistic cultures such as Indonesia, emotional suppression to maintain social harmony may reinforce less adaptive regulation strategies. This study aimed to examine the relationship between insecure attachment and emotion regulation in early adulthood. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 389 participants aged 18–40 years (134 men and 225 women). Data were collected using the Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised Short (ECR-RS) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between insecure attachment and difficulties in emotion regulation (ρ = 0.229, p < 0.001). These findings highlight the role of insecure attachment in shaping emotion regulation during early adulthood.
