Abstract

The increasing use of social media among students in collage can lead to the phenomenon of fear of missing out (FoMO), which refers to the anxiety of missing experiences or activities that others may have. This condition may trigger social anxiety and excessive social comparison, which can affect individuals’ psychological well-being. This study aims to examine the effect of fear of missing out on psychological well-being among emerging adults who actively use social media in Malang City. This research used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The participants were 238 university students aged 18–25 years selected using a accidental sampling technique. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that fear of missing out significantly influenced psychological well-being (R² = 0.43; p < 0.001) with a negative relationship. This means that higher levels of FoMO are associated with lower psychological well-being among emerging adults. These findings indicate that managing social media use wisely and strengthening self-regulation are important for maintaining psychological well-being in students.
