Abstract

The development of social media increases the risk of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in adolescents, namely feelings of anxiety and fear of being left behind in other people's social experiences. Adolescents are generally vulnerable to exposure to a lot of information that causes them to experience FoMO. Adolescents are also in the phase of identity formation where self-control and behavior are still in the process of development. One factor suspected of influencing FoMO is the personality of conscientiousness related to self-control, discipline, and behavioral regularity. This study aims to examine the effect of conscientiousness on FoMO in adolescents who are active social media users. The study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design on 351 Indonesian adolescents through an accidental sampling technique. The instruments used were the Big Five Inventory (BFI) conscientiousness dimension and the Online Fear of Missing Out (ON-FoMO) scale. Data analysis was conducted using a simple linear regression test with the help of Jamovi software. The results showed that conscientiousness has a negative influence with a significant contribution of 32.5%. This research contributes to strengthening the understanding that conscientiousness can act as a protective factor against FoMO in adolescents, and practically serves as a reference for educators, parents, and practitioners to help adolescents manage their use of social media through developing self-control, discipline, and self-management.
