Abstract
First-year overseas students are particularly vulnerable to experiencing psychological distress due to the demands of academic, social, and emotional adjustment, often manifested through symptoms of depression and anxiety. The transition from their home environment to a new setting requires adequate adaptive abilities. One protective factor believed to play a crucial role in preventing the emergence of psychological distress is self-compassion. This study aims to examine the influence of self-compassion on psychological distress among first-year overseas students. This research employed a quantitative correlational approach involving 385 respondents selected through accidental sampling. The instruments used were the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Psychological Distress Scale. The results of simple linear regression analysis showed a significant coefficient of -0.589 (p < 0.05), indicating a negative relationship between the variables. This suggests that higher levels of self-compassion are associated with lower levels of psychological distress. These findings highlight that self-compassion plays an important role in reducing psychological distress among first-year overseas students.
