Abstract

Abstract. A child’s moral character plays a crucial role in shaping future behavior and
personality. The values embraced by children develop through processes influenced by various
factors, one of which is parenting style. Parents serve as primary role models in the
internalization of moral values therefore, the parenting approaches they adopt contribute
significantly to the formation of children’s moral character. Authoritative, authoritarian, and
permissive parenting styles differ in terms of warmth, supervision, and communication, which
may lead to varying influences on children’s moral development. This study examines the
influence of these three parenting styles on the moral character of elementary school children.
A quantitative cross-sectional approach was employed using a multiple linear regression
analysis. The sample was selected through purposive sampling and consisted of 313
participants aged 9 to 13 years, who were fourth- to sixth-grade elementary school students.
Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by researcher, comprising 36 items
adapted from the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ), and moral
character education scale also developed by the researcher based on Thomas Lickona’s theory
of moral character. The findings indicate that authoritative parenting has a positive effect on
children’s moral character, while authoritarian and permissive parenting have negative effects.
