Abstract

The rapid development of technology has made internet use an integral part of daily life, especially for Generation Z. High smartphone usage intensity can lead to the phenomenon of nomophobia, which is a feeling of fear or anxiety when individuals cannot access their smartphones. This condition has the potential to encourage the emergence of problematic internet use, which is a pattern of excessive and difficult to control internet use that can interfere with daily activities. This study aims to determine the effect of nomophobia on problematic internet use in Generation Z. This study uses a quantitative method with data collection techniques through a scale distributed online to Generation Z aged 17–28 years. The number of respondents in this study was 386 people. The instruments used were the Nomophobia Scale and the Problematic Internet Use Scale. Data analysis was carried out using a simple linear regression test with the help of the JASP application. The results of the study showed that nomophobia has a positive and significant influence on problematic internet use in Generation Z with a value of F (1,384) = 146.7 and p < 0.001. The coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.276 indicates that nomophobia has a significant positive effect on problematic internet use (β = 0.526; t = 12.111; p < 0.001), meaning that the higher the level of nomophobia, the higher the level of problematic internet use.
