Abstract

The rapid development of coffee shops in Malang City as an educational hub has contributed to changes in students’ lifestyles, where coffee shops are no longer merely places of consumption but also function as social spaces, learning environments, and means of self-expression. This phenomenon indicates a shift in students’ activity patterns, making coffee shops an integral part of their daily lives. This study aims to describe the forms of student lifestyles, identify the reasons for choosing Janimani Coffee Shop, and understand the meaning of hanging out and studying activities among students. This research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological research type. The research subjects consist of students as the main informants selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data are analyzed using an interactive analysis technique involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students’ lifestyles at Janimani Coffee Shop are formed through activities such as studying, discussions, social interactions, and relaxation. Coffee shops are chosen due to factors such as comfort, supportive facilities, and a conducive atmosphere for productivity and social interaction. Furthermore, activities in coffee shops are interpreted as a means to achieve a balance between academic demands and social needs, as well as a form of self-identity expression.
