Abstract

This study, entitled ‘Social Capital Employed by Traders at Comboran Flea Market to Sustain Their Livelihoods’, aims to identify and understand the strategies employed by traders to maintain their livelihoods amidst market relocation policies. The subjects of this study are traders at Comboran Flea Market in Malang City, specifically those who have remained at their original location following the implementation of the relocation policy. The data collection method in this study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data collection techniques include direct field observation, interviews with traders, and documentation as supporting research data. The results and findings of the study indicate that the survival of Comboran Flea Market traders is significantly influenced by their decision to reject relocation and choose to remain at the old market site. This attitude is the primary factor supporting the sustainability of their businesses in the face of various changes and challenges. When analysed using Robert Putnam’s theory of social capital, this situation reflects the presence of strong social capital, characterised by close networks and relationships among the traders. These networks form a crucial foundation for maintaining the sustainability of their businesses whilst preserving their existence amidst the dynamics of change.
