Abstract

The transition periode of experienced by mothers after the birth of their first child cannot be separated from social support to be able to adjust to their new role as a mother. During this period, social support becomes an important factor that assist mothers in coping with various challenges following childbirth. This study aims to determine the influence of social support on self-adjustment in mothers after the birth of the first child. The method used is a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study subjects consisted of 218 mothers after the birth of their frist child with a time span of 1-3 months after childbirth, selected using a non-probability sampling technique with a snowball sampling method. The instruments used were the Adjustment Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The results of simple linear regression analysis showed that social support had a significant effect on adjustment among first-time postpartum mothers (R= 0,371; R2 = 0,137; p < 0,001), with a contribution of 13.7%. These findings indicate that higher levels of social support received by first-time postpartum mothers are associated with better adjustment in carrying out their new maternal role.
