Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental period marked by physical and psychological changes that increase attention to appearance, particularly among female adolescents aged 17–21 years. Social media use is one of the factors that influences body image due to exposure to certain beauty standards. This study aims to examine the effect of the intensity of social media use on the body image of female adolescents using a quantitative approach with a survey
method involving 251 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Social Media Use Scale to measure the intensity of social media use and the Body Image Scale Youth to measure adolescents' body image, and were then analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that the intensity of social media use had a negative and significant effect on body image (β = -0.130; p = 0.040), with an effective contribution of 1.7% (R² = 0.017). The majority of respondents had low social media use intensity (67.7%) and a positive body image (95.6%). This study highlights the importance of selective social media use in maintaining a positive body image.
