Abstract

This study aims to determine the condition of mathematics learning on fraction material, identify various obstacles experienced by teachers, and describe the efforts made by teachers to overcome these obstacles for fifth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 08 Dau Malang. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of the classroom teacher and 23 fifth-grade students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data obtained were then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions.
The results of the study show that the process of learning mathematics on fraction material still faces several challenges. The obstacles include students’ difficulties in understanding the abstract concept of fractions, differences in students’ learning abilities within one class, low student interest and motivation toward mathematics learning, limited learning time, and a lack of learning support. To overcome these obstacles, the teacher implemented several efforts such as utilizing learning media and teaching aids, relating the material to real-life situations through a contextual approach, applying group learning methods, providing individual guidance to students who experience difficulties, and giving additional assignments to students who have not fully understood the material.
Based on the research conducted, it can be concluded that teachers have a very important role in helping students overcome difficulties in learning mathematics, especially in fraction material. Through the use of various learning strategies and approaches that are adjusted to students’ needs, the learning process can run more effectively and help students understand fraction concepts better.
