Abstract
Background: Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly women and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Patients with ovarian cancer frequently experience high levels of anxiety, especially during chemotherapy treatment. Non- pharmacological nursing interventions such as autogenic therapy are considered effective in reducing anxiety both physiologically and psychologically.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of autogenic therapy on reducing anxiety levels in a patient with ovarian cancer undergoing chemotherapy at Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital, Malang.
Methods: This research used a descriptive approach with a case study design. The subject was one ovarian cancer patient selected based on inclusion criteria. The intervention consisted of autogenic therapy sessions lasting 10–15 minutes, conducted once daily for three consecutive days. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and anxiety level assessment using the DASS-21 anxiety subscale.
Results: After the autogenic therapy intervention, the patient’s anxiety score decreased from the severe category to normal. The patient showed a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms, as indicated by a calmer facial expression, improved communication, better sleep quality, and increased readiness to continue treatment.
Conclusion: Autogenic therapy proved to be an effective non-pharmacological intervention in reducing anxiety in a patient with ovarian cancer. This therapy is recommended as part of holistic nursing care, particularly for patients undergoing long- term treatment such as chemotherapy.
