Abstract

This research was motivated by the low level of students’ mathematical communication skills in solving mathematical word problems. Students often experience difficulties in understanding the information presented in the problems, transforming the problems into mathematical representations, and explaining the solution steps in a systematic manner. This study aims to describe students’ mathematical communication skills in solving word problems through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research subjects consisted of seven seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Plumpang who were selected using purposive sampling to represent variations in academic ability. Data collection techniques were carried out through written tests, observation, and documentation. Data analysis was based on three indicators of mathematical communication, namely visual representation (drawing), the use of mathematical symbols and notations (mathematical expression), and written explanations of solution steps (written text). The results showed that students’ mathematical communication skills were divided into three categories: high, medium, and low. Students in the high category were able to fulfill all indicators of mathematical communication, students in the medium category fulfilled two indicators, while students in the low category were only able to fulfill one indicator. This study provides an overview of students’ mathematical communication skills in problem-based learning.
