Abstract

The purpose of this study is to interpret violence in films and understand the meaning generated from the representation. The research method used is text analysis with a Peirce semiotic approach which is more dynamic in analyzing signs and revealing any meaning contained in the film. Research data was obtained through observation of film texts with a focus on scenes that show forms of violence, whether physical, verbal, or psychological. The results of the study show that the film A Silent Voice represents violence primarily through acts of bullying against characters with disabilities. The representation of violence is visualized in the form of hitting, pulling the victim's hair, pushing, cursing, and playing with hearing aids until the victim's ears bleed as a form of icon, an index here which is a sign that has a direct relationship with its object such as tears which represent sadness and bruised faces which represent violence. And symbols that lead to deep meaning about trauma, social isolation, guilt, and the need for empathy. In addition to showing the negative impact of violence, this film also provides a moral message about the importance of regret, reconciliation, and self-acceptance. Thus, this study confirms that animated films can function as a medium for social criticism of the culture of bullying as well as a means of moral education.
