Abstract
Arsantika Febrianti N. 2025. The Strategy of Using the Buton Language, Wolio Dialect, in the Formation and Strengthening of Group Identity of the Baubau Community. Undergraduate Thesis, Indonesian Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. Supervisor (1) Drs. Sudjalil, M.Si., M.Pd (2) Prof. Dr. Fauzan, M.Pd.
This study aims to describe the strategies for using the Buton language, particularly the Wolio dialect, in the formation and strengthening of group identity among the Baubau community, as well as to identify the impacts of its use on that identity. The Wolio language, as a regional language, plays an important role not only as a means of communication but also as a symbol of the cultural identity of the Baubau people, rooted in the history of the Buton Sultanate.
This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving members of the Baubau community as informants. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The results show that the strategies for using the Wolio dialect are implemented in several ways, including its use within the family environment, in traditional and cultural activities, in daily social interactions, and within educational institutions and local communities. These strategies contribute to the formation of group identity through the internalization of cultural values, the strengthening of a sense of belonging, and the enhancement of social solidarity.
The impacts of using the Wolio dialect include both positive and negative aspects. The positive impacts include strengthening cultural identity, increasing social cohesion, and preserving local culture. Meanwhile, the negative impact identified is the decline in the use of the Wolio language among the younger generation due to modernization and the dominance of the Indonesian language.
In conclusion, the strategy of using the Buton language, particularly the Wolio dialect, plays a significant role in the formation and strengthening of group identity among the Baubau community. Therefore, continuous efforts from various stakeholders are necessary to maintain the existence of the Wolio language as part of the community’s cultural identity.
