Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze and describe the motivational factors driving students of SD Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya to participate in the “Writing on the Ocean” (WOO) activity, the form of its implementation in motivating writing interest, and the benefits of its development in enhancing reading and writing motivation and interest. The method employed is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach, focusing on the students of SD Muhammadiyah 4 Surabaya. Data analysis was conducted thematically using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The findings show that WOO successfully enhanced literacy motivation through two main pillars: intrinsic motivation (epistemic curiosity and sense of adventure) and extrinsic motivation (a joyful learning environment and social recognition). The implementation of this activity is effective because it positions reading as a functional necessity ("Ocean Detective Mission") and optimizes the pre-writing stage with rich multisensory stimuli in a non-conventional environment (ship/sea). The conclusion confirms that WOO is an effective innovative strategy based on Experiential Learning, successfully shifting the perception of writing from a burdensome task to an adventurous experience. This significantly increases the depth of written content, reduces writing apprehension, and builds students' authorial identity.
