Abstract
The development of social media, particularly Instagram, has had a significant impact on adolescents’ lives, including the formation of body image perceptions. This occurrence has the potential to encourage excessive and uncontrolled use of social media, which is known as problematic social media use. This study aims to determine the influence of problematic social media use on negative body image in adolescent Instagram users. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 424 adolescents aged 12–21 years who actively used Instagram and were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to measure problematic social media use and a Body Image Scale to assess negative body image. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression. The results showed that problematic social media use had a significant effect on negative body image among adolescent Instagram users with a probability of p < 0,001 and contributing 26,9%. These findings indicate that higher levels of problematic social media use are
associated with higher levels of negative body image. This study highlights the importance of promoting healthy social media use and education preventive interventions to reduce the risk of negative body image among adolescents.
