Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of self-control on the tendency toward smartphone addiction among final-year university students in Malang City. Final-year students face high academic pressure, such as completing their undergraduate thesis and final academic requirements, therefore, smartphone use is often employed as a form of entertainment and stress relief, which may lead to addictive behavior. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling with an accidental sampling method. The research sample consisted of 100 final-year students in Malang City, aged 20-25 years, and enrolled in at least their seventh semester. The instruments used are adaptations of the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) and Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS). Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that self-control had a significant negative effect on the tendency toward smartphone addiction (R= 0.513; R² = 0.263; p <.001), indicating that self-control contributed 26,3% to the tendency toward smartphone addiction. Higher levels of self-control were associated with lower levels of smartphone addiction tendency among students.
