Abstract
Systolic blood pressure is an important indicator of cardiovascular function that responds dynamically to physical activity, particularly aerobic exercise. This study aimed to analyze changes in systolic blood pressure as a cardiovascular response during aerobic exercise among members of Sports Student Activity Units (UKM Olahraga) at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted involving 80 participants aged 18–25 years selected through purposive sampling. Participants performed aerobic exercise on a treadmill following a modified Bruce protocol, and systolic blood pressure was measured before exercise, during peak exercise, and throughout the recovery phase. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that mean systolic blood pressure increased from 123 mmHg at rest to 135 mmHg during peak exercise and gradually decreased during recovery to 127 mmHg at one minute, 122 mmHg at five minutes, and 117 mmHg at ten minutes post-exercise, with a statistically significant difference before and after exercise (Z = −6.308; p = 0.000). In conclusion, aerobic exercise induces a significant increase in systolic blood pressure followed by a gradual decrease during recovery, reflecting normal cardiovascular adaptation, and systolic blood pressure can be used as a practical indicator to assess cardiovascular responses during aerobic exercise in university students.
