Abstract
Protein and energy are the main determinants of growth success and performance in starter-phase laying hens, as they directly influence tissue formation and metabolic efficiency. An imbalance of these nutrients may result in suboptimal growth and reduced flock uniformity. This study aimed to compare the effects of different protein and energy intake levels on body weight growth and uniformity of starter-phase laying hens reared in a closed house system. A total of 152 Isa Brown hens aged 6–10 weeks were divided into two treatments: P1 (20–22% crude protein; 3,000 kcal/kg metabolizable energy) and P2 (19% crude protein; 2,850 kcal/kg metabolizable energy). The observed variables included weekly body weight and flock uniformity percentage. Uniformity data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods, while body weight gain was analyzed using an independent t-test. The results showed that the highest body weight was observed at week 10, reaching 853 g (P1) and 801 g (P2), with a larger difference compared to week 6 (414 g vs 416 g). Overall, the average body weight of P1 (629.80 g) was significantly higher than P2 (614.20 g) (P < 0,01). The best uniformity occurred at weeks 6 and 7 (100%), whereas the lowest value was observed in P2 at week 10 (80%), below the 85% standard. In conclusion, higher protein and energy levels in P1 were more optimal and efficient in improving growth performance and maintaining uniformity during the starter phase.
