Abstract
Background: Cataracts are a leading cause of visual impairment in the elderly, significantly impacting quality of life and independence. This condition often causes anxiety, especially before surgery. Family support and patient knowledge are considered important factors in reducing anxiety in the elderly before cataract surgery. This study aimed to determine the relationship between family support and patient knowledge and anxiety levels in the elderly before cataract surgery in the Bawean Islands, Gresik Regency, East Java.
Methods: This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 96 elderly cataract patients in the Bawean Islands, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using the Duke UNC (DuFSSQ) family support instrument, patient knowledge using the Cataract Knowledge Questionnaire, and anxiety levels using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale for Anxiety (HARS A). The primary data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test..
Results: The findings indicated that most respondents had high family support and good knowledge levels, while anxiety was predominantly mild. Statistical analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between family support and anxiety (r = -0.434; p < 0.01). Patient knowledge was also significantly negatively associated with anxiety levels (r = -0.322; p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Family support and adequate patient knowledge play a significant role in reducing preoperative anxiety among elderly cataract patients. Strengthening family involvement and providing structured preoperative education are essential strategies to enhance psychological readiness prior to cataract surgery.
