Abstract

TikTok social media is a platform widely used by teenagers and has the potential to influence psychological development, including emotional intelligence. This study aims to determine the effect of TikTok social media addiction on adolescent emotional intelligence with gender as a moderating variable. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study subjects were 229 adolescent active TikTok users. Data were collected using the TikTok Addiction Scale (TTAS) consisting of 15 items to measure TikTok addiction, and the Emotional Intelligence Scale referring to Goleman's concept with a total of 49 items to measure emotional intelligence. Data analysis was carried out using moderated regression analysis with the help of PROCESS Macro Hayes Model 1. The results showed that TikTok addiction did not have a direct and significant effect on adolescent emotional intelligence (β = 0.028; p > 0.05). However, gender was shown to play a significant role as a moderating variable (β = 0.207; p < 0.05). Conditional effect analysis showed that TikTok addiction had a positive and significant effect on emotional intelligence in adolescent boys, but not in adolescent girls. These findings suggest that social media addiction to emotional intelligence is contextual and influenced by individual characteristics.
