Abstract

Rumaisya, Annisa. 2025. Analysis of Nahwu Errors in the Course “Written Translation Practice” Center of Excellence Program: A Case Study of Students of the Arabic Language Education Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Arabic Language Education Study Program. Advisors: (I) Mochammad Firdaus, B.Ed., M.Ed., (II) Dr. Muhammad Fadli Ramadhan, S.Pd.I., M.Pd.
Keywords: Nahwu errors, written translation, Arabic language

This study aims to describe the types of nahwu (syntactic) errors and to analyze the factors influencing the occurrence of these errors in the written translation products of 2022 cohort students in the course “Written Translation Practice” of the Center of Excellence program. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with students of the Arabic Language Education Study Program who take this course as the subjects. The data were collected through documentation of translation assignments and interviews, and then analyzed through the stages of identifying, classifying, and interpreting syntactic errors.
The findings show that the nahwu errors that emerge include mistakes in word order (tartīb al-kalim), case marking (i‘rāb), the choice of prepositions (ḥurūf al-jarr), the formation of iḍāfah constructions (tarkīb iḍāfī), as well as the relations between verb and subject (fi‘l–fā‘il) and between mubtada’ and khabar. The causal factors include interference from the mother tongue, limited mastery of nahwu rules, low intensity of practice in reading and translating Arabic texts, and teaching strategies that do not sufficiently emphasize the application of grammatical rules in translation contexts. These findings indicate the necessity of strengthening applied nahwu instruction, developing more systematic translation exercises, and providing more intensive feedback in order to improve students’ competence in Arabic translation.
