Abstract
Background: Academic anxiety, often experienced by students due to high academic demands, can cause insomnia in the form of difficulty sleeping and decreased sleep quality. Differences in academic workload, leaning methods, and evaluation systems between science and social science students are tough of affect anxiety and insomnia levels. This study aims to analyze differences in academic anxiety and insomnia among the two groups of students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang, class of 2024.
Method: This comparative quantitative research with a cross-sectional design involved 128 students selected through proportionate stratified random sampling, with measurements of academic anxiety using the AAS and insomnia using the ISI, and data analysis using the Mann–Whitney test. It was conducted from October 6 to December 1, 2025.
Results: The results of the analysis show that science students have higher levels of academic anxiety than social science students (p = 0.019). In addition, the level of insomnia among science students is also significantly higher than that of social science students (p = 0.006).
Conclusion: There are differences in the levels of academic anxiety and insomnia between science and social science students. These findings indicate the importance of attention and intervention in mental health and sleep management tailored to the characteristics of students’ fields of study.
