Abstract

Generation Z is a group with a high level of dependence on digital technology, so attitudes toward its use have the potential to influence mental health. Previous studies have shown inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between digital technology and mental health, and most used cross-sectional designs and did not consider cultural context. This study aims to determine the influence of positive and negative attitudes toward digital technology use on the mental health of Generation Z. The literature review included theories of digital technology use, mental health, and empirical findings related to the role of technology in supporting or posing risks to psychological well-being. The study used a quantitative method with a non-experimental correlational design, involving 313 student participants from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The research instruments included the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS) and the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28), which had undergone adaptation, readability testing, and validity and reliability testing. Data collection was carried out in two stages and tested using correlational statistical analysis. The results showed that positive attitudes towards digital technology use had a significant positive effect on mental health, while negative attitudes had a significant negative effect. These findings emphasize the importance of digital literacy and regulation of technology use to support the mental well-being of Generation Z.
