Abstract

Mathematical literacy is an essential ability for students to understand, formulate, use, and interpret mathematics in various real-life contexts. However, PISA results indicate that Indonesian students’ mathematical literacy skills are still relatively low, particularly in solving contextual problems. This study aims to describe the mathematical literacy skills of seventh-grade junior high school students in solving contextual mathematics problems based on the PISA framework.

The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 28 seventh-grade students of SMPN 2 Kalipare, with four students purposively selected as interview subjects representing Levels 1 to 4. The research instruments included PISA-based contextual test items, semi-structured interview guidelines, and documentation. Data were analyzed based on the processes of formulating, employing, and interpreting mathematics at each level of mathematical literacy.

The results showed that most students were at Level 1, characterized by the ability to identify explicit information and use simple routine procedures, but still limited in mathematical modeling and contextual interpretation of results. A small number of students reached Levels 2 and 3, demonstrating the ability to develop strategies and use mathematical representations, and only a few students reached Level 4, showing the ability to analyze complex problems, construct mathematical models, and make decisions based on calculations. These findings indicate that junior high school students’ mathematical literacy skills still need improvement, particularly in modeling and interpretation within real-world contexts. Therefore, the systematic use of contextual problems in mathematics learning is important to be developed.
