Abstract

Adolescents are a vulnerable age group when it comes to body image issues due to physical changes and the influence of social media, especially Instagram. The use of Instagram, which emphasizes visual appearance and ideal body standards, has the potential to influence adolescents' perceptions of their bodies. This condition makes adolescents vulnerable to body image issues, so protective factors are needed to build a more positive body image. One factor that is thought to play a role is self-compassion. This study aims to determine the effect of self-compassion on body image among adolescents Instagram users. The study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research subjects consisted of 424 adolescents aged 12–21 years old in Indonesia who use Instagram, selected using convenience sampling. Data collection was conducted using the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Body Image Scale. Data analysis was performed using simple linear regression analysis. The results of the analysis showed a positive and significant relationship between self-compassion and body image among adolescent Instagram users with a significance value of p < 0.001 (p < 0.05) and a contribution of 26.9%. The implications of this study indicate that the development of self-compassion can be used as one of the factors that help adolescents build a positive body image, especially in facing ideal body standards on Instagram social media.
