Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to describe the representation of Javanese culture in the novel Kereta Semar Lembu by Zaky Yamani and its utilization in literature learning at the junior high school level. The research focuses on three cultural systems: the system of religious activities, the system of knowledge, and the system of social activities of Javanese culture. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method within the perspective of literary anthropology. The data source is the text of the novel Kereta Semar Lembu, while the data consist of narrative excerpts, dialogues, and cultural symbols reflecting Javanese cultural practices. Data were collected through text analysis and literature study, and analyzed through data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the novel represents Javanese culture through the three main cultural systems. The system of religious activities is portrayed through spiritual symbols, ritual practices, and inner contemplation that guide the characters in understanding destiny and life balance. The Javanese cultural knowledge system is reflected in moral values, concepts of harmony, and spiritual perspectives emphasizing the relationship between humans, nature, and God. Meanwhile, the system of social activities appears in etiquette, solidarity, mutual cooperation, and subtle conflict resolution that characterize Javanese social life. In addition, the novel is relevant as literature teaching material for junior high schools because it contains values of religiosity, empathy, responsibility, and mutual cooperation that support character-based learning and the Pancasila Student Profile. Overall, the novel represents the Javanese worldview and has potential as a contextual medium for learning cultural values for students.
