Abstract

The development of social media, especially TikTok, has provided a space for Generation Z to express themselves while building social relationships. This study aims to determine the effect of interpersonal communication on self-disclosure in Gen Z TikTok users. The study used a quantitative approach with a survey method of 188 participants aged 21–27 years old selected through accidental sampling techniques. The instruments used were the Interpersonal Communication Scale and the Revised Self-Disclosure Scale. Data analysis was carried out using simple linear regression with the help of SPSS 27. The results indicate that interpersonal communication does not have a significant effect on self-disclosure, with a significance value of p = 0.486 (p > 0.05) and a coefficient of determination (R²) of -0.003. These findings suggest that although individuals possess relatively good interpersonal communication skills, this does not directly increase their tendency to engage in self-disclosure on TikTok. This study suggests the need to develop healthy interpersonal communication skills in the younger generation so that self-disclosure on social media can be more adaptive, positive, and constructive.
