Abstract

Background: Perioperative hypothermia is a common complication during surgical procedures and is associated with increased risks of surgical site infection, bleeding, coagulation disorders, prolonged anesthesia recovery, and extended hospital stay. Effective prevention is highly dependent on the knowledge and behavior of healthcare providers in the operating room. This literature review aimed to analyze the relationship between healthcare workers’ knowledge and their preventive behaviors toward perioperative hypothermia.
Method: This research design uses a literature study. Literature searches were conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect databases using the inclusion criteria of international journals, written in English, full-access, and published between 2020–2025. The search was conducted using the keywords (knowledge) AND (hypothermia prenvention) AND (operation room).
Results: Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that four journals met the criteria for further analysis. The results indicate that healthcare workers' knowledge regarding hypothermia prevention is still in the low to moderate category. There is a positive relationship between the level of knowledge and the attitudes of healthcare workers, with attitudes playing a crucial role as a mediator in shaping preventive behavior. Training interventions have been proven effective in increasing knowledge, attitudes, and prevention practices, as well as significantly reducing the incidence of perioperative hypothermia, from 41% to 15% in one of the studies.
Conclusion: enhancing healthcare workers’ knowledge through structured training and institutional support plays an essential role in improving preventive behavior toward perioperative hypothermia. Strengthened knowledge and practice ultimately contribute to reducing perioperative complications and improving patient safety during surgical care.
