Abstract

Background: The use of social media among students is increasing and has the
potential to cause problematic use, one of which is social media addiction. Excessive
use of social media is often associated with psychological problems, including Fear of
Missing Out (FOMO).
Methods: This study used a correlational quantitative design with a cross-sectional
approach. The sample consisted of 135 undergraduate nursing students selected using
total sampling technique. The instruments used were the Bergen Social Media
Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to measure social media addiction and the Fear of Missing
Out Scale (FOMOS) to measure FOMO. Data analysis was performed using
Spearman's rank correlation test.
Results: The results showed a significant positive correlation between social media
addiction and FOMO (r = 0.532; p = 0.000). Most respondents were in the moderate
social media addiction category (50.4%) and low FOMO category (86.7%).
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between social media addiction and
Fear of Missing Out among undergraduate nursing students. The higher the level of
social media addiction, the higher the level of FOMO. Controlling social media use is
important for maintaining students' psychological well-being.
