Abstract
Overseas students face various emotional challenges such as loneliness, stress, and limited social support from family that can trigger negative emotions and maladaptive behaviors such as self-harm. Strong attachment between parents and children plays an important role in helping migrant students regulate emotions and prevent self-harm behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parental attachment and self-harm in overseas students. The respondents of this study were 145 overseas students with an age range of 18-24 years. The measurement instruments for this study used the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) and the Self-Harm Inventory (SHI). The data analysis method used Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis with the help of SPSS for Windows version 24. Based on the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant negative relationship between parental attachment and self-harm behavior in overseas students with a correlation value of 0.674 with a significance value of <0.000, meaning that the lower the parental attachment, the higher the tendency of self-harm behavior in overseas students. This interesting finding tends to get a protective parenting pattern, so that the ability to cope with resilience allows for bullying and several other causes.
