Abstract
Background: Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases experienced by older adults and affects not only physical conditions but also psychological and social aspects. Lack of social support can increase stress, reduce medication adherence, and negatively impact the quality of life of older adults. Adequate social support from family, friends, and the community plays an important role in helping older adults manage their illness and maintain their well-being.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between social support and quality of life among older adults with hypertension.
Methods: This study used a descriptive-correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 98 older adults with hypertension selected using purposive sampling. The instruments used were the MOS-SSS questionnaire to measure social support and the OPQOL-Brief to assess quality of life. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: Most respondents had high social support (92.9%) and high quality of life (93.9%). The Spearman test results showed a strong and significant relationship between social support and quality of life among older adults with hypertension (r = 0.761; p = 0.001). This indicates that the higher the social support received by older adults, the better their quality of life.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between social support and quality of life among older adults with hypertension. Optimizing social support, especially from family and the immediate environment, is essential to improve the physical, psychological, and social aspects of older adults so that their quality of life can be well maintained.
