Abstract
This study has four objectives: (1) to describe the Muhammadiyah elites’ understanding of religious moderation in Surabaya; (2) to describe the da’wah methods used by Muhammadiyah elites in Surabaya; (3) to describe how religious moderation is internalized from the perspective of Muhammadiyah elite da’wah in Surabaya; and (4) to analyze the challenges faced in internalizing religious moderation within the Muhammadiyah elite da’wah framework in Surabaya. This is a qualitative study conducted in Surabaya, specifically at the Regional Muhammadiyah Leadership Office of Surabaya City. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis techniques included data condensation, data display, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. This dissertation concludes the following: Understanding Religious Moderation from the Perspective of Muhammadiyah Elite Da’wah is based on the principle of wasathiyah, which includes tawassuth (middle path), i‘tidal (uprightness and justice), tasamuh (tolerance), and ishlah (peace-making). Da’wah Methods of Muhammadiyah Elites in Surabaya include direct preaching, discussions, sermons, and study sessions as the main tools (da’wah bil-khitabah), followed by contributions to social activities such as education and community services (da’wah bil-qudwah hasanah), as well as the use of digital media for written and visual communication (da’wah bilwasâ’il raqmiyyah). Internalizing Religious Moderation within Muhammadiyah elite da’wah in Surabaya is carried out through institutional strengthening, open da’wah, reinforcing wasathiyah values, and shaping an enlightening Islamic identity (tanwîr). This process is implemented through education, community engagement, and digital media to cultivate a tolerant and harmonious society. Challenges in Internalizing Religious Moderation include the presence of extremist groups, low levels of religious literacy, and the influence of radicalism on social media. Muhammadiyah responds through dialogical, educational, and digital da’wah strategies that emphasize role-modelling, wasathiyah values, and approaches suited to the character of younger generations.
