Abstract

Twenty-first century learning requires students to develop critical and creative thinking skills; however, in Biology learning, particularly on the topic of classification of living organisms at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Kota Batu, these skills have not been optimally developed because learning is still dominated by conventional approaches. This study aimed to analyze the effect of an OIDDE-based electronic module (modul elektronik), consisting of Orientation, Identify, Discussion, Decision, and Engage in Behavior, on students’ critical and creative thinking skills. This study employed a mixed-method approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest control group design. The sample consisted of class VIIE as the experimental group (31 students) who learned using the OIDDE-based modul elektronik and class VIIF as the control group (29 students) who received conventional instruction. Data were collected through pretest and posttest of critical and creative thinking skills, observation sheets of learning implementation, and interviews with teachers and students. Quantitative data were analyzed using inferential statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the OIDDE-based modul elektronik had a positive and significant effect on improving students’ critical and creative thinking skills compared to conventional learning. Students in the experimental class demonstrated better abilities in analyzing, evaluating, drawing conclusions, and generating more diverse and original ideas in classifying living organisms. Therefore, the OIDDE-based modul elektronik is proven to be an effective innovative learning medium to develop higher-order thinking skills. This study implies that the OIDDE-based modul elektronik can be used as an alternative learning medium in Biology to support 21st-century learning and is recommended for other topics that require critical and creative thinking skills.
